On Tuesday, 26 November at 11am (AEDT), the Migrant Workers Centre will host a 45-minute online and in-person workshop on the impact of misleading job advertisements (MJAs) on migrant workers, non-migrant workers and the wider working economy - focussed on the building and construction sector.
In 2022, a UnionsNSW report found that over 60 percent of recruitment in eight major Australian industries involved MJAs - with migrant workers widely offered below award wages and conditions and, as a result, being at risk to other illegal hiring activities.
Workshop content
The workshop content will:
- outline the MJA problem targeting migrant workers, specifically in the building and construction industry;
- present a social media-based pilot proposal to counter MJAs that target Chinese speakers in the building and construction industry.
- seek comment from workshop participants on how MJAs impact migrant workers involved in their organisations; and
- seek comment from workshop participants on the pilot's current and future development.
Workshop facilitators
The workshop facilitators will be:
- Dr Maggie Liyaning Tang, a senior lecturer at the University of Newcastle with significant experience researching the health & safety and mental health experience of migrant workers (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V0kNnIjdXY&t=1s)
- Dr Julian Scarff, a teaching associate at Monash University who has previously worked as a labour lawyer and advised on infrastructure projects in Australia, South East Asia and the Middle East.
